New for 2012 the WAR-Mini course will include the same course as the WAR-Sport but with a shortened first run. For those of you who are familiar with the infamous Spink run you’ll understand that avoiding the toughest part of this run makes a WAR jersey a whole lot more attainable.

STAGE 1: Spink Mountain Run
Distance: 8.6km
Meters Climbed: 575m
This run route take you up the fire trail close to the Poulanass Waterfall before ascending on the famous Spinc boardwalk to enjoy the superb valley and mountain views. You then descend to cross the Glenalo river by footbridge and descend to pass the disused miners village along a sometimes tricky trail to the transition area at the upper lake car park close to the start / finish area.
For WAR-Mini this will involve a 5km return run on the north side of the Upper Lough. Still as scenic, still as awesome, just a little less hard work! The rest of the WAR-Mini Route will be the same as the WAR-Sport Stages below.
STAGE 2: Glendalough to Lough Dan Cycle
Distance: 15km
Meters Climbed: 165m
STAGE 3: Kayak Lough Dan
Distance: 2km
It is anticipated that ~ 90% of people will use the kayaks that we shall provide. If you would like to bring your own kayak please follow this link to further info.
The kayaks provided are two person sit-on kayaks which do not require any specialist skills to paddle.
You will get onto the kayak with whatever other competitor arrives at Lough Dan with you or else you can wait for a friend.
Note: there will not be a time-out at the kayak, so any waiting will be included in your overall time.
You will be required to put on a life jacket in advance of entering the water and the boats must be lifted from the water and positioned on the bank as directed by the marshals before returning paddles and lifejackets and rejoining your bike for the next section of the race.
You will need to walk / run to the edge of the lake where the kayaks are located – This is a distance of ~ 400m along a gravel track with a narrow grass verge. You are requested to use shoes in the kayak stage to avoid possibility of cutting of your feet on stones or and other debris. After returning to your bike you must take all equipment with you before leaving the transition area.
